The Problem & Background

The customer had compressed air leaking from a threaded pipe joint next to a valve. Checking with an air-leak visualization acoustic camera revealed an air leak of about 2.3 L/min at this joint, with the screen showing an estimated cost of roughly 8,050 yen per year.

Product Adopted: UV-Curing Repair Material "LeakAid"

The customer adopted the UV-curing repair material "LeakAid Complete Kit (LL-100-LACK)". Apply LeakAid to the leak, shine the dedicated UV light on it, and it cures in just 1 second — a material built for field repair. For this job, a silicone sheet (optional item) was used as well.

Repair Procedure

  1. Apply LeakAid to the air leak. Taking advantage of the fact that LeakAid does not stick to the silicone sheet, the team placed LeakAid on the silicone sheet and pressed it onto the leak point.
  2. After the work, the leak was re-checked with the air-leak visualization acoustic camera.

Result

Because this was a repair performed while the joint was still leaking — something we normally do not recommend — it did not reach a 100% seal. Even so, the leak was reduced to a level so small that even the air-leak visualization acoustic camera could no longer detect it.

Application Tips

For air and water leaks, we normally recommend carrying out the repair with no pressure applied. That said, because LeakAid blends with oil, light weeping leaks can sometimes be repaired while still leaking by mixing it with oil as it is applied.
